Description

Provides a comprehensive overview of the tectonic evolution of one of the key areas of Gondwana geology, the Weddell Sea and surrounding regions. It brings together in one volume a unique collection of international datasets from one of the most remote, least known and least accessible seas in the world. Difficult ice conditions have protected the Weddell Sea from the type of comprehensive investigation carried out in other key oceanic areas so that progress towards generally accepted models has been slow and characterized by controversy. Uncertainties as to how the continental fragments surrounding the Weddell Sea should be reconstructed within the Gondwana supercontinent have prevented the acceptance of plausible Gondwana break-up models. This book seeks to fill this significant gap in our knowledge by incorporating available marine and land geophysical data, on-land geological data and satellite gravity data. It has greatly increased our understanding of the evolution of this complex region and of the processes associated with Gondwana break-up. The book addresses thefollowing topics: history of sea-floor spreading in the Weddell Sea; origin and nature of the Weddell Sea embayment area - continental or oceanic?; origin and nature of continent-ocean boundaries and the prominent escarpments bounding the Weddell Sea and embayment area; kinematic history of microplates based onpalaeomagnetic data; kinematic history of crustal shear and fault zones related to Weddell Sea evolution; and Gondwana break-up processes and the initial rifting history in the Weddell Sea area.
