The West Midlands Regional Group (WMRG) organises technical and social events for a wide range of geoscientists in the region; from Shrewsbury to Stratford, Tamworth to Worcester, and everywhere in between. Our members come from various fields of expertise, from industry and academia; from students and enthusiasts to retirees.
Our evening meetings/talks are typically held on the second Tuesday of each month, between September and May. They generally take place at Mott Macdonald's office, 10 Livery St, Birmingham B3 2NU. All meetings count towards Continued Professional Development (CPD), with certificates available on request.
Our annual general meeting is held around December time each year and all Fellows of the Society are welcome to attend. We always welcome new members and encourage and support the next generation of budding geoscientists from school through to university, to Chartership and onwards. Come along to a talk or event and satisfy your geoscience curiosity, or simply get in touch if you would like to know more.
To keep up to date with WMRG talks and events you can keep an eye on this page, follow us on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, or send a request to be added to our mailing list via the details below. Fellows of the Society living in postcode areas beginning with B, CV, DY, HR, ST, SY, TF, WR, WS, and WV should receive regular communication from our committee. If you do not, then please review your preferences on the Society's website and get in touch.
Aims and objectives
All Regional Groups of the Geological Society exist to further the objectives of the Geological Society.
The WMRG actively pursues the objectives of the Society by:
- Holding meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, between September and June, online (see our events listings).
- Organising several field meetings each year locally and further afield.
- Posting records of talks and field meetings on our web page primarily for the benefit of those unable to attend.
- Holding periodic dedicated Chartership workshops to assist members in pursuit of Chartership.
- Promoting third party events that may be of interest to our members.
- Organising extra events to promote geoscience to the general public during GeoWeek (May) and Earth Science Week (October).
- Promoting the Society's 'Early Careers Award' scheme, holding our regional heat in January.
- Visiting schools and Tertiary Education centres, when invited, to promote geoscience to students.

Our events
We have a number of events planned - please refer to the Programme of Events for further information: Programme of Events
For slides and notes from previous WMRG talks, please visit the abstracts and meeting notes page.
Members are positively encouraged to take advantage of these local events which not only offer opportunities for personal CPD but also give opportunities for networking, the value of which should not be underestimated. Our popular field trips offer these same opportunities and should be of particular interest to fellows unable to make the evening talks.
If you would like to propose a topic for a future talk, then please contact our Programme Co-ordinator.
