Fellows and Student members of the Geological Society of London enjoy a range of access benefits and additional options by virtue of their membership of the Society such as:

All Fellows and Student members are entitled to full online access to one Society journal option as part of their package of member benefits.

There are four journal options to choose from for 2024:

  1. Journal of the Geological Society (JGS) and Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology (QJEGH)
  2. Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis (GEEA)
  3. Petroleum Geoscience (PG)
  4. Geoenergy

Additionally, all Fellows and Student members receive free online access to the Transactions of the Geological Society of London (published 1811-1845).

Fellows and Student members can also choose to subscribe to additional Geological Society of London journal options for an annual fee. Please see the membership fees page for current rates.

Amendments to subscriptions can be made via the Update my details web page.

To find out how to access journals online, visit the FAQs page.

Please note: The Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society and the Scottish Journal of Geology are not Geological Society of London journals. GSL members can access content of the relevant journal by using Pay-per-view Access, purchasing a non-member subscription or by joining YGS for the Proceedings or GSG or EGS for the Scottish Journal (and Transactions of the Edinburgh or Glasgow geological societies).

Special Publications, Memoirs and Engineering Geology Special Publications (Book Archive)

In addition to their journal entitlement, Fellows and Student members receive free access to the Society’s online "Book Archive".

The Book Archive provides access to Geological Society of London published books on the Lyell Collection published prior to the current and three previous calendar years - and all references are actively linked through to the source of cited material.

For 2023 the Book Archive includes book content published in 2019 and earlier.

From January 2024 the Book Archive includes book content published in 2020 and earlier.

In addition to the GSL Book Archive the Petroleum Geology Conference series (published on behalf of PGC Ltd.) is also available to Fellows on the Lyell Collection (volumes 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8).

Open Access

The Geological Society publishes Open Access articles which are free to all and are designated by an Open Access logo.

The Open Access Article Processing Charge can be found on the Author Information page of the relevant journal or book series. A discount is available to Fellows of the Geological Society for GSL-owned journals (where the corresponding author or at least half the authors are Fellows or student members).

Elsevier and the Geological Society of London (GSL) have collaborated to provide GSL members with a unique opportunity to gain individual access to thousands of geological maps from the renowned Lyell Collection through the Geofacets platform. This is an innovative map-based research tool designed for geoscientists. These maps are downloadable, geo-referenced, and accompanied by meta data, article abstracts and links to original source articles.
Geofacets-GSL Millennium Edition is a free service exclusively for members of the Geological Society of London (until December 31 2023).

Elsevier has announced that, after careful consideration, they have decided to sunset Geofacets. As you know, the Millennium Edition member benefit was powered by Geofacets. Since Elsevier will no longer be able to develop or support this platform beyond this year, the last day to access Millennium Edition will be December 31, 2023. We regret any inconvenience this loss may cause to you.

Friends of the Society do not receive access to Lyell Collection content or to Geofacets content as part of membership.
