Description

Full title: A Delineation of the Strata of England and Wales with part of Scotland; exhibiting the collieries and mines, the marshes and fen lands originally overflowed by the sea, and the Varieties of Soil according to the variations in the Substrata, illustrated by the most Descriptive Names

Size: 59 x 42 cm (image size: 54 x 38 cm). Dispatched in a cardboard tube.

An A2 size map print reproduced by the Geological Society of London from an original of William Smith's famous 1815 geological map recently rediscovered in its archives. The size of the printing presses in the early 19th century meant that the map was originally published in fifteen sections. The sections held in the GSL Library have been scanned, the joins removed digitally and the map re-sized to create this A2 print.

William Smith county map prints and other related titles, including Simon Winchester's The Map that Changed the World, are also available here.

An 1815 William Smith map of England and Wales can also be viewed at The Geological Society of London.
