Biography:
Frank Remington Pretyman, the second and youngest son of Mr and Mrs William Pretyman, was born on 17 February 1891. He was educated at Marlborough, where he joined the rifle corps. He studied mining at the Royal School of Mines between 1908-1913, and had surveyed part of Mexico and was geologist to various prospecting expeditions in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, before joining the Society in 1914. He was attached to the Geological Survey of Wisconsin when war broke out, and returned to Britain on 3 September 1914 and enlisted as a despatch rider in the Royal Engineers eight days later. He rose to the rank of sergeant and received his commission on 17 April 1915 when he joined one of the tunnelling companies of the Royal Engineers in France as second lieutenant. He was twice gassed underground, the second time when attempting to save the life of a fellow soldier. Promoted to lieutenant in September 1915, he later exchanged into the Scots Guards (2nd Bn) as second lieutenant on 29 July 1916. Pretyman was promoted to lieutenant on 28 April 1917, and was killed in action on 4 July 1917.
