The 100 Great Geosites Photo Competition

In 2015 we ran a photography competition based on the Society’s list of 100 great geosites in the UK and Ireland, which were published in 2014. The 13 winning images all featured in our 2016 calendar.

The 2015 Prizewinners

About the Competition

The competition, open to all, asked for images featuring any of the 100 sites, which include landscapes, museums, public buildings and beaches, all of which reflect the UK and Ireland’s unique geo-heritage. 

'We were impressed with the number and quality of entries to the competition’ says Geological Society Executive Secretary Sarah Fray. ‘It’s wonderful to see such a range of diverse images, and I hope the photographs will encourage many people to explore the geology all around us in the UK and Ireland'.

All of the winning images featured in the 2016 100 Great Geosites calendar, as well as in a free exhibition at the Geological Society during Earth Science Week 2015.

Joint Photo Competition

The Joint Regional Group Photo Competition

Entrants to the Joint Regional Group Photo Competition, ‘Geologica Britannica’ were very welcome to enter the same photographs in both competitions – provided eligibility criteria are met.

The 2015 Joint Regional Group competition was open to anyone living/working within the postal districts of the Southern Wales, West Midlands and North Western Regional Groups, with a deadline of 1 December 2015.

Rules & Prizes

The winning photographs were featured in the calendar, with full credit. In addition, first, second and third prizes were awarded at the Launch of Earth Science Week:

  • 1st prize: £100
  • 2nd prize: £50
  • 3rd prize: £25

All winners also received a collection of geological goodies, including our much coveted rock hammer usb sticks, and a year’s free subscription to Geoscientist magazine.
