What is the role of geosciences in delivering sustainable Energy
This talk will highlight the critical role that both geoscience and individual geoscientists must play in the delivery of sustainable energy and in meeting national and global commitments. Rather than attempt to cover the entire spectrum of this topic, I will focus on a few key examples with details on the approaches that are currently being taken and highlight what we still need to learn, and show the range of traditional and future skills that will be needed to underpin these. I hope to convince people of the exciting role that geology can play, not only technologically but also through sustainability and community engagement.
Speaker
Kevin Taylor is a Professor of Geosciences at the University of Manchester. His research and teaching interests include the application of field and laboratory geological observations to energy systems, and he is currently focussed on energy storage, shallow geothermal and the use of the sub-surface to store and dispose of waste materials. Whilst this research is global in nature, a current push is to understand UK systems and options. He leads the MSc course in Geoscience for Sustainable Energy at the University of Manchester.
