Course description
The scope of the course will be to provide an introduction to some of the main principles and technologies of Field Monitoring for Earthworks and Geotechnical assets, and to present and discuss current technologies through exemplar applications and case histories. In general, the format of the workshop will be as interactive as possible with several Q&A sessions.

This session will introduce the general concepts associated with monitoring for Earthworks and Geotechnical Assets, the central importance of meaningful and trusted data. |

Practical Session: Instruments, Data Acquisition and Data Conversion
This session will include practical demonstrations of some of the instruments and techniques, as well as practical data collection and data transformation exercises. It will be based on a critical review of exemplars and case histories, which will be used to describe and discuss in detail some of the technologies and instruments for the monitoring of Earthworks and Geotechnical assets, their applicability and their limitations.

Monitoring Data Management and Analysis Requirements
The last session of the workshop will focus on the requirements and features for a monitoring data dissemination system. The importance of a common environment for integrating monitoring data and other data (e.g. site progress, significant events, geological information, weather data) will be discussed, as an essential tool for effective data interpretation.

Speaker
Daniele Fornelli MSc CEng MICE (Associate Technical Director, Geotechnical Observations)
Daniele holds a MSc in Civil Engineering and a BSc in Environmental Engineering. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and has been involved with complex infrastructure projects in the UK and abroad, including tunnels, deep excavations, earthworks, dams, and ground treatment schemes.
Daniele is currently an Associate Technical Director for Geotechnical Observations Ltd. and follows the technical aspects of a number of monitoring schemes across the UK.
Daniele is involved with the activities of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, as a member of TC206 (Interactive Design), and TC220 (Field Monitoring). He is also the current Leader of the AGS I&M Working Group.
