Time and location
Time: The walk starts at 1pm on Saturday 14 September 2024. The walk will last a minimum of two hours. At most, the walk will last until dusk.
Location: Meet at 1pm at the lay-by on the Killard Road, Downpatrick. What3Words: hosts.alien.dorms
If the weather is poor, we will reschedule to Sunday 15 September 2024, meeting at 2pm.
Event details
Joint Belfast Geologists' Society and the Northern Ireland Regional Group of The Geological Society for a geological afternoon stroll to Killard Point.
This will be a very moderate walk, with minor steep slopes optional. Highlights will include:
- Stratigraphy & tectonics of the Southern Uplands Accretionary Prism
- Killard Interstadial and deglacial complex
- Coastal geomorphology (raised beaches, blowholes, coastal erosion)
- Butterflies, coastal flowering plants, abundant birdlife (sand martins, sea birds, red kites)
- Heritage (WW2, NATO radar, Canadian troopship)
- Lead mineralisation
- Ulster Bank £5 note images
- Geophysics and remote sensing demonstration
The walk is designed to tail-end with morning archaeology/geology events at Portico (Portaferry) European Heritage Weekend
