Temporary Works Groundwater Control for Construction
Module 7 - Groundwater control methods: Impacts from groundwater control
Wednesday 3 April, 16.00 GMT
Course Objectives
The course is intended to give practicing geotechnical specialists (engineering geologists, hydrogeologists and geotechnical engineers) and master’s level students a thorough grounding in the principles and concepts of the methods that can be used to control groundwater for construction and tunnelling projects.
1. To have an understanding of the hydrogeological factors affecting groundwater problems for construction and how these can be controlled
2. To understand the range of groundwater control methods and their characteristics and limitations
3. To have an appreciation of regulatory issues that apply to these type of works
4. To understand the potential mechanisms by which groundwater control can cause external impacts.
Module 7
Impacts from groundwater control
- Why does groundwater control cause external impacts?
- Ground settlement
- Barrier effects
- Impact on groundwater supplies
- Impact on groundwater dependent features
- Impacts from discharge of water
- Groundwater control in the vicinity of contaminated land
- Less common impacts
- Effective monitoring of groundwater control systems
- Decommissioning aspects
Speakers
Dr Martin Preene
Dr Martin Preene is a dewatering specialist and groundwater engineer with more than 35 years’ experience in the management, control and exploitation of groundwater. He has worked for contractors and consultants on civil engineering, mining, oil & gas and infrastructure projects worldwide, including Europe, West Africa, Russia, North and South America, Central Asia, East Asia and the Middle East.
He has expertise in the design and construction of groundwater control by pumping (such as wellpoints, deep wells, eductors, relief wells, etc), groundwater depressurisation and cut-off walls to exclude groundwater. He has worked on the design and construction of open pit and underground mines, as well as other engineering projects such as tunnels, basements, metro systems, power stations and dry docks for construction of oil production platforms.
Dr Preene is a UK Registered Ground Engineering Advisor, Chartered Engineer, Chartered Geologist, Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and Chartered Environmentalist. He has wide professional interests in hydrogeology and is the author of more than 60 papers, including a dewatering textbook and several industry guidance documents on the investigation and control of groundwater.
