An Introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage: A Course for Geoscientists, Regulators, Policy Makers and Investors
Date: 12 & 13 October 2023
Location: Online - Zoom
Speaker: Dr Mike Stephenson - Chief Geologist
This course satisfies a part of the market that is not currently catered for – the wider science, risks, financing, planning and social licence aspects of CCS. These are issues that are as important as the technical issues in the sense that any of them can be a show-stopper for CCS.
This course is for geoscientists, environmental scientists, regulators, policy makers and investors who deal with geological and engineering information related to carbon capture and storage. The course will cover the role of CCS within decarbonisation as an aspect of earth system science; why CCS is necessary; how CO2 is captured in industrial processes and how it can be used industrially; the factors affecting geological storage; how CO2 stores are monitored for leakage; how CCS will be regulated; how CCS will pay for itself; and the social licence for CCS.

Image Log Analysis; Past, Present and New Technology
Date: 5 & 7 December 2023
Location: Online - Zoom
Speaker: Jurry van Doorn, Dr. Melissa Johansson
This course is concerned with the historical development, physical measurement principles and applications of technologies that were originally designed to obtain the orientation of strata in the subsurface, but are now used to provide a full geological description of the formations crossed by the borehole.
The course will be suitable for a wide range of professionals including petrophysicists, geophysicists, geomodellers and reservoir engineers from oil, gas, geothermal, water, nuclear and CCS industries that have used or are planning to acquire dipmeter logs/borehole image logs as part of their data acquisition campaign. Some basic knowledge of well logging methods would be beneficial.

Practical Marine Engineering Geoscience Data Interpretation
Date: 15 & 16 February 2024
Location: Online - Zoom
Speaker: Francis Buckley - Consultant Marine Geoscientist
This course will deliver practical guidance on assessment of the quality and characteristics of the full range of seismic data, how it may be conditioned to aid interpretation, how velocity models are employed in time-depth conversion, and how acoustic impedance provides a common language facilitating the full integration of seismic and groundtruth data.
Marine engineering projects involving some form of interaction with, or penetration of, the seabed, are dependent on input from geoscience practitioners, working with acquired geophysical, geotechnical and well data, in order to optimise engineering design parameters and minimise project risk.
