Event details:
The development of geothermal energy to provide sustainable baseload heat and power at different scales is moving at an unprecedented pace. Many new projects are in development, and funding levels are increasing for both companies and projects.
The 11th UK Geothermal Conference aims to highlight the technical and scientific advances being made across the spectrum of geothermal exploration and development.
Whether you are involved in exploration, development, policy or regulation, this symposium is for you. Broad themes may include, but are not limited to:
- shallow geothermal and heat pumps;
- minewater heat;
- subsurface geological studies;
- heat and power from granites; and
- case studies from the UK and abroad.
Additional areas of research, such as the development of innovative technologies and solutions, mineral extraction from geothermal waters, and the potential environmental impacts of geothermal energy, are also welcomed.
It remains an exciting time for the geothermal industry in the UK and this three-day symposium aims to showcase all aspects of research and development in this emerging industry.
Workshops (separate registration required)
Registration will be closing at 12pm Thursday 7 November 2024. On-the-day registration will only be permitted if there is availability.
Please note the workshops will be running at the same time.
Join us on the third day of the conference for a series of workshops and classes, where industry experts will delve into some of the most pressing hurdles facing the geothermal sector today. These engaging sessions will explore challenges such as high initial costs, regulatory barriers, and the complexities of drilling. Attendees will gain valuable insights into innovative solutions and strategies to overcome these obstacles, paving the way for the future growth and sustainability of geothermal energy. Don't miss this opportunity to network with professionals and deepen your understanding of the industry's critical issues.
Workshop 1: Advancements in Geothermal Drilling: Best Practices and Emerging Technologies for High-Temperature Operations and Enhanced ROP (In-person attendance only)
As geothermal energy projects extend into deeper, hotter reservoirs, the demand for advanced drilling solutions has grown significantly. This workshop will explore the best practices in geothermal drilling, with a focus on optimising operational safety and efficiency. Attendees will be introduced to the latest global drilling technologies, designed to operate in extreme temperatures and significantly improve Rates of Penetration (ROP). Through case studies and expert analysis, participants will gain insights into how these innovations can enhance geothermal well performance, reduce operational costs, and increase project sustainability.

Workshop 2: Optimising Geothermal Deployments
The National Geothermal Centre has set targets for 10 GW of geothermal heat and 1.5 GW of geothermal electricity in the UK by 2050 and is preparing a roadmap to support the delivery of this. There are many different deployments for UK geothermal and people interested in developing geothermal may be unsure about which option to choose. This workshop lead by NGC and BGS with support from DESNZ will work to populate a table profiling all the different geothermal deployments with stakeholders in the workshop evaluating the pros and cons of each based on a range of metrics. Objectives for the National Geothermal Centre are to work towards a decision-making tool and national plan for UK geothermal development. Outputs will feed into ongoing work by NGC, DESNZ and BGS that will be shared in brief via the NGC website, in more detail with workshop stakeholders and also used by the Geol Soc Energy Group, DESNZ and BGS to share the availability and versatility of the UK’s geothermal resources. This work is also expected to highlight where further work/ knowledge is required.
