Forty seven countries around the world have now established a National IYPE Committee. The UK's committee is the External Relations Committee of the Society.

As preparations get under way for the official Global Launch Event (12-13 February 2008 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris), chaired by UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, the International Year announced a writing competition for young people, shortlisted candidates being invited to attend the ceremony, where prizes will be awarded.

All students of the world, between the ages of 18 and 22, are invited to submit an essay, poem, or other personal written contribution to one of the 10 themes of the IYPE to their National Committees (or, if no such committee exists yet, to the IYPE Secretariat at NGU in Norway) before 15 November 2007.

National IYPE Committees will select up to five entries for consideration in the final stage. UK students are invited to send their entries to Dr Ted Nield at [email protected]. The Society will provide the funds to cover the travel costs of the award-winning students to Paris.
