Diphthongs out!
Council (June meeting) approved a proposal from the Stratigraphy Commission that GSL adopt international spellings, particularly regarding diphthongs, writes Adler DeWind.
This change has been adopted by the Publishing House and the Society will adopt this as the ‘house style’ in any communications from Burlington House.
That means, for example, that we shall henceforth use: Archean, Paleoproterozoic, Paleozoic, Paleocene, Paleogene, Cenozoic, Eon, Eonothem. The decision only applies to stratigraphical terms – we will continue to use the traditional British spelling of other words, such as ‘palaeontology’ and ‘archaeology’.
