Sponsor a Book update
Herschel’s A treatise on astronomy (1833) has been restored through the Sponsor A Book appeal, writes Michael McKimm.
John Herschel (1792-1871), a renowned and highly influential mathematician and astronomer, played a key role in the creation of the Astronomical Society (from 1831 the Royal Astronomical Society, now the Society’s neighbour in Burlington House). For nearly two decades A treatise on astronomy was deemed the authoritative presentation in English of astronomical science and was soon translated into Danish, French, and German. The Library thanks Dr Sue Shawcross for sponsoring this volume, our copy of which was presented by Herschel himself.
