They are important in informing governmental policy on matters relating to Earth science and the natural environment. Almost all have a form of post-graduate qualification, and many have studied to PhD level.

How to get ahead
- An environmentally-orientated degree path allows greater access to possible careers.
- A Postgraduate degree is essential, at Masters level as a minimum, but PhD study is important in the Government sector.
- Work experience doing research in the private sector can be extremely useful.
