Separation geotextiles are, by some considerable margin, the highest volume geosynthetics in common use and yet the UK, unlike many other developed countries, has no national classification system for these materials and no simple guidance for practicing professionals related to their specification. Concerns have been expressed in the industry over recent years about the decline in the quality and suitability of geotextiles in everyday use and the presenters consider that the lack of suitable clear guidance is the principle driver for this decline.

The presentation of 'Geotextiles - A UK Classification System for Basic Separation and Filtration' by Ian Fraser (TCS) and Steve Corbet (AECOM) will introduce a potential system for classification of these materials. The intention is to establish an acceptable minimum specification for basic separation geotextiles and establish clear guidance to assist specifiers in their choice of these materials based on various project driven factors.
