Overfold and thrust fault, Devon
The thin layers of limestone in the photo below contain shell debris and corals, showing that the lime mud containing them was laid down in a tropical lagoon during the Devonian Period nearly 400 million years ago.
The layers were folded and faulted about 300 million years ago, when southwest England became joined to the rest of what we now know as the British Isles. The upper layers were folded over like a rucked carpet before, eventually, the fold snapped and the upper layers began to move (from right to left) along the fault (thrust) plane.
