In view of international endeavour to tackle climate change, there are mounting efforts to meet net zero as part of the energy transition. Innovative Earth science research and techniques support the sourcing of essential raw materials, the development of circular economies, in subsurface storage and capture solutions, and in geothermal energy production.

Geoscientists are uniquely placed to support policy makers, stakeholders and industry in the energy transition in addition to educating relevant communities. Activities in the energy transition theme aim to help drive future research, support communication between academia, business, government, and public communities, and inspire a new generation of geoscientists.

The energy transition theme is led by Dr Bas Spaargaren.

Additional policy work is undertaken by the Decarbonisation Working Group. This group works on key issues at the interface of geoscience and public policy, developing resources and initiatives to highlight and communicate key enabling decarbonisation technologies to policymakers and the wider public.
