This two-day interactive course is intended as an introduction to the assessment and treatment of historical Coal Workings in the UK for early career professionals and as a refresher course for working professionals.
Coal mining has altered the landscape and stability of the ground beneath us. Since 1872, records of abandoned mine workings have been required but they can be incomplete, and mining may have taken place before this date.
The Coal Measures are a complex sequence of sediments disturbed by faulting and folding. When investigating sites for development or infrastructure, the potential for coal workings being present requires a geologist with knowledge of how coal measures were formed, their sequences and structure, and an ability to interpret three-dimensional geology and when historical workings have been undertaken. An understanding of mining techniques and practices is also required.
- Coal Measures stratigraphy, structure and relevant geological principles
- Sources of data and records for an effective literature search
- Techniques used for working coal to understand legacy workings
- Techniques and examples of site investigation design to establish ground stability
- Techniques and approaches to the treatment of mine shafts, audits and workings to deliver a stable site
Modules are 3.5 hour sessions each, including presentations, group exercises, question & answer sessions with speakers and tea breaks.
Each day will start at 9:30 BST and will finish at 16:45 BST.
Day one (24 April):
- Geology and Stratigraphy
- Coal Workings and Records
Day two (29 April):
- Investigation Design and Techniques
- Coal Workings Treatment
Joining details will be sent out the day prior, alongside any course materials that may be needed.
