Numerous universities, colleges and schools visit Castleton for a day or weekend field excursion but, surprisingly, no comprehensive book to all aspects of the geology and geomorphology appears to have been published so far. This guide sets out to summarize both geological and geomorphological features to be seen on a series of day's walks around the Castleton area.
The Castleton area is within the Peak District national park and much of the land crossed by the itineraries is in the care of the National Trust or its tenant farmers. In view of its geological, mineralogical and geomorphological interest, much of the Castleton area has been scheduled by English Nature as a Site of Special Scientific Importance.
