"Engineering Geology is the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of the engineering and environmental problems which may arise as the result of the interaction between geology and the works and activities of [humans] as well as to the prediction and of the development of measures for prevention or remediation of geological hazards" – IAEG Statutes, 1992;
The 'Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology' (FMEG) will be held every two years by the Geological Society in memory of Peter Fookes, FGS, by virtue of a generous in memory donation from Mrs Edna Fookes.
Each Fookes Meeting will be developed with a thematic focus aligned to our 'Geohazards, Geoengineering & Georesilience' Science Theme, in collaboration with the wider community via our Engineering Group (EGGS), and supported by Geological Society staff.
The meeting will appeal to both academic researchers and those working in industry, with the aim to foster stronger networks and new collaborations between the two branches of the Engineering Geology community, with a particular focus on supporting early-career members of this community.
Thanks to the generous donation in Peter Fookes' name, the meeting will be free to attend for all GSL Fellows and Student Fellows (with a delegate fee for non-Fellows). The two-day hybrid event will be held in person but will also be available remotely for an accessible and international audience.
Event details
The inaugural meeting will combine two keynote speakers, panel discussions with invited guests, networking sessions with industry professionals, poster presentations, and a student competition alongside the main scientific programme that we anticipate will have speakers from across academia, government, and industry.

Abstracts
Abstracts are currently being accepted for the inaugural Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology (FMEG) for both oral and poster presentation.
Abstracts will be assessed based on the content of the abstract with names/affiliations removed and selected by the FMEG working group.
Students (both current undergraduate and postgraduate) are welcome to submit abstracts for inclusion in the main programme, and/or as part of the student competition within the FMEG programme (details below).
Topics for inclusion within the FMEG programme may include, but are not limited to:
- geological hazards (both assessment and impacts);
- geotechnical investigations and/or design;
- materials properties;
- landslide and slope stability;
- erosion;
- flooding;
- dewatering;
- seismic investigations;
- applied rock engineering;
- borehole design and operation;
- construction practices;
- climate change vulnerabilities, impacts and adaptations;
- statistical modelling and image analysis;
- geomorphology;
- rock mechanics and fluid-flow;
- GIS;
- site selection (including geological mapping & sample analysis); and
- contaminated land/environmental remediation.
