The presentation will outline the dramatic changes that have occured in the way construction work is monitored over the last six years, seen through the development of Laing O'Rourke's internal instrumentation and Monitoring department. This will primarily look at ground movement and asset protection monitoring, but will also touch on environmental monitoring such as noise, dust vibration and water quality. The talk will draw on experience and lessons learnt on major projects such as Crossrail and Thames Tideway, to provide practical guidance on how monitoring should be undertaken and how to deal with fundamental issues of error, accuracy, repeatability and the "focussing illusion". Changes in measurement technology will be discussed, as well as looking forward to future development in areas such as fibre optics, laser scanning, photogrammetry and satellite imagery.

The event is generously supported by Laing O'Rourke.
